Cologne meeting market: Over 50,000 events for the first time >
A significant increase for Cologne as a convention destination

The more than 50,000 events held in Cologne in 2018 represent a 6.5 per cent increase compared to the previous year. The number of participants increased by 8.5 per cent compared to the figure for 2017.
One reason for the growth in both areas was the significant rise in the number of event venues, with 17 new venues bringing the total from 174 to 191. The new venues in Cologne in 2018 consisted of a convention centre, two conference hotels and 14 event locations, which mostly have smaller seating capacities. The new venues include new ones as well as re-openings of existing ones after renovations. In addition, the number of events held in conference hotels in particular showed very positive development, with an increase of 6.6 per cent.

“The figures provided by the current TagungsBarometer (Conference Barometer) clearly demonstrate that both the supply and the demand are continuing to grow in Cologne as a convention destination,” says Stephanie Kleine Klausing, the Deputy CEO of the Cologne Tourist Board. “The meeting market in Cologne is already bringing in annual turnover amounting to €720.1 million.

Corporate events are in first place

Organizers of corporate events continue to top the list of conventions and congresses, accounting for 68 per cent of the total. Banking and insurance are still the most important sectors in this category, followed by medical and pharmaceutical companies. They are followed by communication companies, which once again occupy third place after being in fourth place in the previous year.

International source markets: UK occupies first place

In the comparison of international event organizers, the UK was once again the most important source market for Cologne, followed by the USA. They were followed, at a certain distance, by Austria, the Netherlands and a newcomer to the Top 5: Italy.
You can find an overview of the upcoming congresses, conventions and other events at locations.cologne.

Checklists for event planners New service of the Cologne Convention Bureau helps organizers plan events
A new service of the Cologne Convention Bureau (CCB) is now available: Event planners can now find a set of guidelines at locations.koeln that will help them optimally plan their event. In six steps complete with checklists, planners of a meeting or an evening event are guided through the process of organizing their event. The service is available in German and English for beginners as well as professionals, and it can be used in Cologne or anywhere else. The CCB is the first convention bureau to offer this kind of global service, which uses a storytelling format.

On the website, the user is guided in six chapters through the process of planning an event. Entertaining graphics are combined with appropriate checklists that are available for download, and care is taken to ensure that no detail will be forgotten. The guidelines cover important work steps such as
- defining the goal and the target group,
- designing the concept and doing the calculations,
- checking the planning process,
- organizing and
- staging the event,
- and doing the follow-up work.

The accompanying texts also refer to the current thematic focus of the Cologne Tourist Board: Culinary Cologne. The texts use concepts of cooking activities and compare the planning of a successful event with the preparation of an elaborate meal.
